Following the catastrophic earthquake in western Iran, our heart is filled with great sorrow for the people of this region. SAM Rah Shah recommends a number of during and after earthquake tips:

During the Earthquake:

  • If you are indoors, stay there. Quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk or a strong table. The goal is to protect yourself from falling objects and be located near the structural strong points of the room. Avoid taking cover near windows, large mirrors and hanging objects. Objects like sofas, beds and other furniture could get crushed or become compressed when building or roof collapse. But next to them is a “void” (often in a triangular shape) which is a safe place to seek cover, ideally in the fetal position.
  • If outdoors, stay in open areas away from buildings, power lines, trees, and other potential hazards.
  • If driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges and overpasses, or under power lines, trees and large signs. Stay in your car.

After the Earthquake:

  • Be prepared for aftershocks, which may be stronger than the initial jolt.
  • Check for injuries; attend to injuries if needed, help ensure the safety of people around you and summon assistance if necessary.
  • Check for structural damages, but do not enter a building that shows damages or has visible cracks in the walls or foundation.
  • Turn off gas, and water if the damage is suspected or if advised to do so by authorities.
  • Be patient: It may take hours or days to restore all services depending on the severity of the quake.
  • Take care of children. It is better if a separated place would be devoted to them for protection from psychological trauma.
